Packaging design for FMCG and D2C brands in India: cost and process

Your pack is your most-seen ad, your quick-commerce salesman and your legal document, all in one artwork. Here is what good packaging design costs and how the process actually runs.

The three shelves your pack must win in 2026

A modern Indian consumer pack fights on three fronts simultaneously. The physical shelf, where it sits beside legacy brands with decades of recognition and centimetres of facing space. The quick-commerce tile, where Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart render it at postage-stamp size against nine competitors and a price tag. And the ad thumbnail, where the pack shot is the most reused creative asset the brand owns. A pack designed only for the shelf — the traditional brief — routinely fails the other two, which is where most of a D2C brand's revenue actually happens.

This is why packaging design has moved from a launch-time purchase to a growth lever. On Zama Organics the fix was pulling the visual register back to a single premium standard so the ads looked like they came from the same company as the packaging — coherence between pack and feed is free reach, and incoherence is a quiet tax on every impression.

What packaging design costs in India in 2026

Working market ranges. Freelance designers handle single-SKU pack adaptations for ₹15,000 to ₹50,000. Boutique studios build a proper pack design with dielines, variants and print-ready files for ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 per SKU family. Agencies designing a full packaging system — architecture across a range, variant logic, label templates, guidelines — quote ₹2,00,000 to ₹10,00,000 and beyond depending on range width. Structural packaging (the physical form, not just the artwork) is a separate discipline and a separate budget.

The honest way to read those numbers: a system costs three to five times a one-off pack but is usually cheaper by the fifth SKU, because every new variant inherits the architecture instead of commissioning a fresh argument. Brands that buy packs one at a time end up with a shelf that reads as five companies sharing a logo — the exact disease we rebuilt Sri Sri Tattva's content system to cure, at range scale.

Packaging is the one ad every customer sees, holds and keeps in their kitchen. It deserves at least the rigour you give a Meta campaign.

The process, from audit to print

A serious packaging engagement runs in five stages. Audit: the current range photographed on real shelves and real app tiles, competitive mapping, and a hard look at which SKUs actually sell. Architecture: the range logic — what stays constant (brand block, layout grid) and what flexes (variant colour, flavour cues), decided before any single pack is drawn. Design system: the hero SKU designed and stress-tested at 80 pixels, on shelf mockups, and in print proofs. Rollout: variants produced against the system, each checked against the architecture rather than redesigned from taste. Print QA: dielines, colour profiles, substrate tests and the unglamorous discipline that prevents the teal that turned green on foil.

Timeline honesty: four to eight weeks for a hero SKU and system, two to three weeks per variant wave after. Compressing the audit and architecture stages to save a fortnight is the most expensive shortcut in the discipline.

The FSSAI layer: designed in, not stickered on

For food, beverage and nutrition brands, the label is a legal document before it is a brand asset. Mandatory declarations — ingredient lists, nutrition panels, veg and non-veg marks, net quantity, dates, licence numbers, allergen statements — consume real estate and carry font-size minimums. Treat them as design constraints from the first draft and the pack stays clean; treat them as stickers to add after sign-off and the artwork gets destroyed in week one of production. The same discipline applies to claims: what the front of pack promises, the label and the law must support.

Our rule on every food pack: the compliance layer is drafted into the layout grid before the brand layer is styled. The designer who resents the nutrition panel has not understood the brief — legibility under regulation is the craft, not an obstacle to it.

Test the pack with ads before you print it

The cheapest packaging research in India is a ₹15,000 ad test. Before committing to plates and inventory, run the shortlisted pack directions as static ads against your real audience: same product, same offer, different pack renders. Click-through tells you which design stops the buyer you actually pay for — not the buyer in the focus group. The method costs less than one focus group and reports in days, from the exact population that will meet the pack on a tile. It will not judge shelf presence or tactility, but it kills the genuinely weak direction before the expensive mistakes are printed.

This is the advantage of packaging design running inside a house that buys media daily: the design decision gets an evidence loop, and the ad account gets a pack built to perform in it. That integration is the premise of our brand and packaging design service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does packaging design cost in India?

Working 2026 ranges: ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for freelance single-SKU work, ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 per SKU family at boutique studios, and ₹2,00,000 to ₹10,00,000+ for full packaging systems across a range. Structural packaging is budgeted separately.

How long does packaging design take?

Four to eight weeks for a hero SKU with a proper audit, architecture and print QA, then two to three weeks per variant wave. The stages worth never compressing are the audit and the range architecture — errors there multiply across every future SKU.

What are the FSSAI requirements for food packaging labels?

Ingredient lists, nutrition information, veg/non-veg marks, net quantity, manufacturing and expiry dates, licence number and allergen declarations, with prescribed minimum sizes. Design them in from the first draft — retrofitting compliance destroys artwork.

Should a D2C brand design packs for quick commerce?

Yes — the tile is now a primary shelf. That means high contrast, a strong brand block, variant colours that separate at postage-stamp size, and a pack that reads in the first three words. Check every design at 80 pixels before approving it at full size.

How do I test packaging design before printing?

Run the shortlisted directions as static ads to your real audience and read click-through. It costs a fraction of formal research, reports in days, and samples the exact buyers who will meet the pack on a tile or in a feed.
