Product photography in India: costs, the D2C shot list, and the thumbnail test

Your pack shot will be seen a million times at 80 pixels before anyone sees it at full size. Here is what to shoot, what it costs, and how to make it earn media money.

What product photography costs in India in 2026

Working ranges across the market, not quotes. Per-image pricing for clean e-commerce shots runs ₹500 to ₹3,000 depending on styling complexity and retouching depth. Half-day studio shoots land between ₹15,000 and ₹40,000; full days with a stylist and proper food handling run ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000+. Lifestyle shoots with models, locations and art direction start around ₹60,000 and climb quickly. Food photography carries a premium over hard goods because appetite appeal is a craft — steam, pour, crumb and gloss are skills, not presets.

The honest cost question is not per image but per usable asset: a day that produces forty frames of which thirty feed ads, PDPs, marketplaces and social is cheap; a beautiful day that produces six hero shots nobody can crop for a story format is expensive at any price.

The D2C shot list: what every consumer brand actually needs

Before any creative brief, a consumer brand needs a core library. The pack-forward hero on clean and on brand-colour backgrounds. Texture macro — the crumb, the pour, the granule, the gloss — because appetite and efficacy are judged by texture at thumbnail size. Scale and hands: the pack held, the serving spooned, because size confusion is a silent conversion killer. Ingredient flat lays for story-led formats. Routine context: the product where it actually lives, kitchen shelf or gym bag, not a marble fantasy. The marketplace set: white-background frames built to Amazon's rules. And the PDP sequence — five to eight images ordered to answer objections in sequence, not to look pretty in a folder.

This library is the raw material of everything downstream: statics, carousels, marketplace listings and the site itself. Shoot it as a system once, and the monthly creative pipeline stops re-buying the basics.

Shoot for the thumbnail first. A photograph that only works at full size is a print asset, and you are not running a print brand.

The thumbnail test, and why it decides everything

Most of India meets your product at thumbnail size: a quick-commerce tile, a search result, a story frame, a feed square on a mid-range phone in sunlight. So the approval discipline is simple: judge every frame at 80 to 120 pixels before admiring it at full resolution. Does the pack read? Does the variant colour separate from its siblings? Does the texture still look like food, or has it become brown noise? On Pure Whites the brief was explicitly product-forward frames with visible texture and packaging that still reads at thumbnail size — that discipline lifted click-through 200% when the creative was rebuilt around it.

The thumbnail test also settles styling arguments quickly: the prop-heavy editorial frame that wins the deck usually loses the tile, because at 100 pixels the props are clutter and the pack is lost.

In-house, studio or hybrid: who should shoot what

In-house phone-plus-lightbox setups now genuinely cover routine needs: marketplace refreshes, social proof content, quick variant shots, UGC-adjacent frames. A studio earns its fee for the annual core library, true appetite work, and anything involving steam, pour or models. The working hybrid for most D2C brands: one or two serious studio days a year for the system library, monthly in-house production for volume, and the discipline of a shared shot-list template so in-house output stays inside the brand's visual system instead of drifting.

On Sri Sri Tattva, photography was brought inside the same content system rather than briefed on its own — that is the structural fix. Photography briefed in isolation produces beautiful orphans; photography briefed inside the creative system produces ads.

Marketplace and quick-commerce image rules that matter

Amazon India's main image rules are strict enough to design for: pure white background, product filling most of the frame, no props, no badges baked into the main image. The listing sequence after the main image is where persuasion lives — infographic frames with claims the label supports, comparison charts, lifestyle context. Quick-commerce tiles are harsher still: Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart render your pack at postage-stamp size next to nine competitors, so contrast, variant colour and brand block carry everything. If your pack was designed without the tile in mind, photography has to compensate — tighter crops, higher contrast, variant colour pushed hard.

Making photography earn media money

Photography is a cost centre until it enters the ad account, where it becomes measurable. Feed the library into static families and carousel tests; let click-through tell you which frames sell, then reorder PDPs and listings behind the winners. Parasbaagh's clean editorial photoshoots with natural palettes gave the product a premium look in the feed, where price is judged before it is read — and that premium read is a media outcome, visible in the numbers, not a taste opinion. This loop — shoot, test, learn, reshoot the winners deeper — is how our creative team briefs every shoot, and it is why the second year of photography always outperforms the first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does product photography cost in India?

Typical 2026 ranges: ₹500 to ₹3,000 per image for clean e-commerce shots, ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 for a half-day studio shoot, ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000+ for full days with styling, and ₹60,000 upwards for lifestyle shoots with models. Food photography prices at the upper end because appetite appeal is specialised work.

What photos does a D2C brand need for its product pages?

Five to eight images ordered to answer objections in sequence: pack-forward hero, texture macro, scale or in-hand shot, ingredient or benefit frame, routine context, and social proof. The order matters as much as the quality — the gallery is a sales script.

Can I shoot product photography in-house?

For routine needs, yes — a phone, a lightbox and a shot-list template cover marketplace refreshes and social volume. Keep studio budgets for the annual core library, real appetite work and anything with steam, pours or models.

What are Amazon India's product image requirements?

The main image needs a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame, no props or badges. Persuasion belongs in the subsequent listing images: infographics with label-supported claims, comparisons and lifestyle frames.

Why do my product photos look bad in ads?

Usually because they were approved at full size and never checked at thumbnail scale, where most impressions happen. Judge frames at 80 to 120 pixels: if the pack, variant and texture do not read there, the photo will underperform regardless of its quality.
