Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Dukaan: the real monthly bill at 100, 1,000 and 5,000 orders

Pricing pages show the subscription. Your P&L pays subscription plus percentages plus apps plus the developer you didn’t budget.

In short: As of August 2026: Shopify India runs ₹1,994–30,164 a month plus a 2%/1%/0.6% third-party transaction fee by plan (Shopify Payments is not available in India). WooCommerce software is free, but hosting, plugins and developer time make a real store cost roughly ₹1,000–45,000 a month as you scale. Dukaan runs free to ₹5,999 a month plus a 0.99–4.99% per-order service fee (capped ₹200/order). At 1,000 orders a month and ₹800 AOV, all three converge — the decision is who does the work and which cost shape you can live with.

What does each platform cost on paper?

As of August 2026: Shopify’s India pricing page lists Basic at ₹1,994/month (₹1,499 on annual billing), Grow at ₹7,447 (₹5,599), Advanced at ₹30,164 (₹22,680) and Plus from ₹1,75,000/month — with a third-party gateway transaction fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% and 0.2% respectively. WooCommerce software is free; Indian hosting runs from roughly ₹249–599/month at introductory shared-hosting prices (renewals ₹449–649) to a few thousand a month for serious managed capacity. Dukaan’s published plans run Free, ₹299, ₹999 and ₹5,999 a month with a per-order service fee of 4.99%, 3.99%, 1.99% and 0.99% respectively, capped at ₹200 an order, with payment gateway charges extra.

The line Indian founders under-read is Shopify’s transaction fee. Shopify Payments is not available to Indian merchants as of August 2026, so the “third-party gateway” fee applies to essentially every online order — 2% on Basic on top of your payment gateway’s own ~2% MDR. Dukaan’s service fee works the same way: a platform percentage stacked over gateway charges. WooCommerce is the only one of the three with no platform percentage at all — which is exactly why its true cost hides somewhere else.

What do the percentages do at real volume?

Percentage fees are a silent partner in your GMV. On Shopify Basic, ₹8 lakh of monthly sales pays ₹16,000 in transaction fees — eight times the subscription. That also produces a crossover worth knowing: upgrading from Basic (2%) to Grow (1%) pays for itself once 1% of your GMV exceeds the plan-price gap, which on monthly billing is at roughly ₹5.5 lakh of monthly online sales. The same arithmetic says Advanced’s 0.6% only beats Grow past roughly ₹55–60 lakh a month. Dukaan’s ₹200-per-order cap matters for high-AOV brands: above a ₹10,000 ticket on the Growth plan, the effective service fee falls below 2% and keeps falling. Run your own numbers before any plan upgrade — the platforms will not run them for you.

What is the bill at 100, 1,000 and 5,000 orders a month?

Illustrative monthly totals at ₹800 AOV, monthly billing, excluding GST, payment-gateway MDR (~2% everywhere) and ad spend. WooCommerce figures are realistic all-in ranges (hosting, plugins, maintenance) — the cash cost, not the founder-evenings cost.

Orders/monthShopifyWooCommerce (all-in)Dukaan
100 (≈₹80,000 GMV)≈₹3,600 — Basic ₹1,994 + 2% (₹1,600)≈₹500–1,500 cash — plus your own time≈₹3,500 — Starter ₹299 + 3.99% (≈₹3,190)
1,000 (≈₹8L GMV)≈₹15,400 — Grow ₹7,447 + 1% (₹8,000); Basic would be ≈₹18,000≈₹10,000–22,000 — managed hosting, plugin licences, maintenance retainer≈₹16,900 — Growth ₹999 + 1.99% (≈₹15,900)
5,000 (≈₹40L GMV)≈₹47,400 — Grow ₹7,447 + 1% (₹40,000); Advanced ≈₹54,200 until ≈₹55L+ GMV≈₹25,000–45,000 — serious hosting plus part-time developer≈₹45,600 — Infinity ₹5,999 + 0.99% (≈₹39,600)

Read the convergence, not the winner. At 1,000 orders a month all three land within a few thousand rupees of each other; at 5,000 they converge again. What differs is the shape of the cost: Shopify and Dukaan charge you a percentage of GMV forever, while WooCommerce converts that percentage into fixed costs — hosting and a developer — which is a good trade only if you actually have the developer. The honest tiebreaker is rarely the platform bill anyway: a 0.5-point conversion-rate gap between a fast, well-built store and a slow one moves more money at this scale than every fee on this table, which is why the conversion benchmarks matter more than the pricing pages.

What about apps, plugins and dev time?

The subscription is the visible cost; the stack is the real one. On Shopify, a working D2C stack — reviews, bundles, WhatsApp, loyalty, subscriptions — typically adds a dollar-denominated app bill that lands anywhere from a couple of thousand to ₹15,000+ a month as you scale; audit it quarterly, because zombie apps bill forever. On WooCommerce the equivalents are plugin licences (often annual, and they renew at full price) plus the update-and-conflict tax: someone has to test every WordPress, WooCommerce and plugin update, and that someone is a retained developer or an agency. Dukaan bundles its plugins into the plans — genuinely cheap, until the thing you need next does not exist in its catalogue and there is no third-party ecosystem to buy it from. Dev time prices the difference: Shopify theme tweaks are cheap and fast to iterate — which is exactly what CRO iteration speed depends on — WooCommerce gives you total control at salary cost, and Dukaan gives you a low ceiling at near-zero cost.

Platform fees are rent. Dev time is a salary. Percentages are a share of your GMV — know which one you are signing.

How painful is migration if I outgrow my choice?

Plan for it before you pick, because at least one migration is the base case for a growing brand. Catalogue and customer data move between all three; order history, reviews, app data and theme work largely do not. The expensive part is SEO: URL structures differ, so a proper 301 redirect map is non-negotiable, and even done well, expect a traffic wobble measured in weeks. Own your domain from day one — never a platform subdomain — and keep your product content in a spreadsheet-of-record so re-import is boring. Budget four to eight weeks of part-time effort for a real migration, more if your website is your primary channel and downtime is revenue.

Who should pick what in 2026?

We compared the three on checkout quality, ecosystem and hiring in the decision piece; this one is the invoice view. If you want the platform bill read against your whole growth P&L — fees, conversion, CAC and all — that is what a growth audit does.

Quick answers: Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Dukaan costs

How much does Shopify cost per month in India?

Published India pricing as of August 2026: Basic ₹1,994, Grow ₹7,447 and Advanced ₹30,164 a month (cheaper on annual billing; Plus from ₹1,75,000), plus a 2%/1%/0.6% third-party gateway transaction fee by plan — over and above your payment gateway's own ~2% MDR.

Is WooCommerce really free?

The software is. The store is not: hosting (roughly ₹249 a month at intro shared prices to several thousand for managed capacity), plugin licences and developer time put a real WooCommerce store anywhere from about ₹1,000 to ₹45,000 a month depending on scale.

What does Dukaan charge per order?

A service fee by plan — published at 4.99% (Free), 3.99% (Starter, ₹299/month), 1.99% (Growth, ₹999/month) and 0.99% (Infinity, ₹5,999/month), capped at ₹200 an order — plus your payment gateway's charges on top.

Which platform is cheapest at 1,000 orders a month?

On cash alone, a well-run WooCommerce build usually wins (roughly ₹10,000–22,000 all-in) — if you already have dev capacity. Shopify Grow (≈₹15,400 plus gateway MDR) and Dukaan Growth (≈₹16,900 plus gateway) land close together at ₹800 AOV.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify charge transaction fees in India?

Yes. Shopify Payments is not available to Indian merchants as of August 2026, so the third-party gateway transaction fee applies on online orders: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus — charged over and above your payment gateway's own MDR.

When does Shopify Grow become cheaper than Basic?

When the 1% you save on transaction fees exceeds the plan-price gap — roughly above ₹5.5 lakh in monthly online GMV on monthly billing. The same arithmetic says Advanced's 0.6% only beats Grow past roughly ₹55–60 lakh a month, so upgrade on maths, not on ambition.

Can I start on Dukaan and migrate to Shopify later?

Yes — catalogue and customer data move; order history, reviews and app data largely do not. Keep your own domain from day one and budget a proper 301 redirect map with four to eight weeks of effort, or the migration taxes your SEO harder than the service fee ever did.

What WooCommerce costs surprise founders the most?

Renewal pricing (intro hosting rates roughly double at renewal), annual plugin licences that quietly renew, the update-and-conflict tax after every WordPress or plugin update, and the retained developer. Budget maintenance as a monthly line item, not as an emergency.

Your platform bill is noise. Your conversion rate is signal.

The audit reads your store the way a P&L does — fees, speed, conversion and CAC together — and tells you whether to fix the platform or the funnel.
